Pitclochry Festival Theatre

Pitlochry Festival Theatre, also known as the Theatre in the Hills, was founded in 1951 by a man called John Stewart. Unable to secure building materials in post-war Britain, the first plays at the theatre were actually staged in a tent until a purpose-built theatre could be created some time later. PFT operates a unique repertoire system during its Summer season, offering a different show every night of the week, with two on matinée days. As well as its productions, PFT also offers a year-round programme of concerts, workshops, talks and backstage tours, enabling people to engage both with the theatre and its spectacular grounds.

Director & Project Leader

August 2006
For 12 - 16 year olds

Over the course of five days, I worked with a group of young people at PFT, devising a detective drama - Murder In The Manor - which was then performed in promenade around Explorer's Garden. Through the devising process we explored text, radio drama, character development and working in a site-specific context.

Here are some images from the performance:

  • The Butler welcomes guests to Barlow Manor
  • Greeting guests in the Lobby
  • The daughter and the nosey neighbour
  • There's been a murder!
  • The Detective reveals his plans
  • The drunk uncle
  • The uncle and the son drown their sorrows
  • Running to the next scene ...
  • Aha ... a secret message!
  • The Summer House
  • A family argument
  • Idle gossip in the Pantry
  • All the suspects together
  • The Detective weighs up the evidence
  • It was the Butler!
  • 'Murder In The Manor' cast
